What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a fun, medium-paced sport that combines the best elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, making it easy to learn and suitable for players of all ages and skill levels. It’s one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and now it’s available right here in Melbourne’s western suburbs at SPORTS POINT!

Fun Fact: Pickleball was invented in 1965 and named after a “pickle boat crew,” where rowers were selected from the leftovers of other boats – much like how the sport combines elements of different games!

How to Play Pickleball – The Basics

Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with a tennis-height net, a solid paddle, and a plastic ball with holes. Here’s a quick rundown of the rules:

  • Doubles play: Typically played in doubles (two players on each side).
  • Underhand serve: The serve must be underhand and land diagonally cross-court.
  • Two-bounce rule: The receiving team must let the serve bounce, and the serving team must let the return bounce before hitting back.
  • Volleying allowed: Once the ball has bounced on each side, players can volley (hit it on the full) or let it bounce.
  • Non-volley zone (the kitchen): A 7-foot area near the net where volleys are not allowed.
  • Scoring: A point is scored when the serving team wins a rally. Games are typically played to 11 points and must be won by at least two points.
  • “Pickled”: Losing a game 11-0 – something you’ll want to avoid!
